The Inauguration of the KPFA Harpsichord by Barry Taxman
Barry Taxman studied with Paul Hindemith, Quincy Porter, and Darius Milhaud, and has taught at Yale, The Music and Arts Institute of San Francisco, Juilliard, and the School of American Ballet in New York. In 1970 he was living in Berkeley , CA>, and composed “The Inauguration of the KPFA harpsichord” for a the then, recently constructed instrument, built for KPFA by Jon Bokelman, also of Berkeley. The kit utilized for this instrument was donated by Alex Zuckerman, who, around 1966 was affiliated with Zuckerman Harpsichords of New York. For four or five years, the instrument lay dormant in the garage of a friend of KPFA who had abandoned the building project when the station stopped reimbursing him for his work. The partially assemble kit was eventually discovered and construction was renewed through the generous efforts of Mr. Bokelman, and ultimately celebrated by means of this new composition and performance by Mr. Taxman.
